New Year Resolutions

Second after second, minute after minute, hour after hour and day after day, we complete 365 days and a year passes.
The current year ends leaving us with memories. Memories, that brings joy and sorrow. At the 365th day, we
think of all the hardships we have gone through the passed year. How to convert these hardships into happiness becomes
the top priority for the next year. Each one of us vows that the problems that we faced in this year won't be repeated next
year.

A 13-year-old teenager was asked about his New Year resolution. Thinking straight he said, “I will start studying hard next
year, watch less television and play less so as to devote more time to studies.” He looked very determined in achieving
his objective. Only time will tell as to how he will fare.

A 21-year-old student was asked the same question. He responded by smiling shyly. “I’ll   be graduating from college
next year. As soon as I get my graduation degree I would like to appear for the CAT examination and acquire a seat in
IIM Ahmedabad and pursue higher studies in management.”

A chain smoker, when asked about his New Year resolution, immediately answered: “I would like to give up smoking.”
Reverberating the view of the chain smoker a group of smokers studying in a college in Kharghar expressed a similar
resolution. They said, “We would like to quit smoking. Another reason is that we are ardent fans of Shah Rukh Khan. We
would like to emulate him as even he has quit smoking recently.”

When a housewife encountered the question of New Year resolution, she made a list of the places her family would be
visiting for their holidays the next year.  A 24-year-old software engineer, when asked about his plans said, “I would be
switching jobs for better prospects.” However, a middle-aged well settled guy had a different opinion. He said, “I’m not
happy with what I’m doing right now. I’m not satisfied with my job.” He was in a midlife crisis. He further
continued: “I would like to do something different the next year; pursue another career line probably”

An old man when asked about his New Year resolution said, “I would like to get my second daughter married to a boy of
my choice as my first daughter had eloped and had a love marriage. So I’m very keen to arrange the marriage of
my second daughter before she professes her love to someone and repeats the same.”

On the whole, we see how the onset of a new calendar year has tickled the grey cells of individuals of different age
groups. Most times a New Year resolution is made just for the heck of making one. It is seldom put to practice. It is very
easy to make a New Year resolution… But it takes immense courage and determination to step into reality to accomplish
the set resolution.
